The Rose Bowl Heroes

On January 1, 1942, just a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, witnessed a spectacle of both triumph and heartbreak. The Ohio State Buckeyes, led by legendary coach Paul Brown, squared off against the Oregon State Beavers in the annual college football classic.

Among those who took the field that day were a group of young men who would soon trade their football uniforms for military fatigues. They were athletes, scholars, and patriots, their youthful exuberance tempered by an unyielding determination to serve their country.

One of these young men was a star halfback named Les Horvath, who would later earn the distinction of being the first Heisman Trophy winner to be killed in action. Another was Pete Pihos, a bruising fullback who would become a decorated war hero.

As the game commenced, the Buckeyes dominated play, powered by the relentless running of Horvath and the bruising blocks of Pihos. The Rose Bowl crowd roared with excitement, oblivious to the impending storm that would soon engulf the nation.

The Call to Arms
